‘Mildron’: Revolutionizing mildew control in potato crops with advanced technology
The fight against mildew in potato cultivation has taken a groundbreaking turn with Mildron, an innovative project aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of phytosanitary treatments while improving their efficacy.
Through cutting-edge technologies and a collaborative effort, Mildron is advancing early detection and sustainable treatment strategies for one of the most persistent challenges in potato farming.
A Collaborative Effort Rooted in InnovationLaunched under the Order of July 7, 2020, which approves subsidies for European Innovation Association Operational Groups, the Mildron project is spearheaded by Asociafruit. This initiative brings together expertise from the Department of Graphic Engineering and Geomatics at the University of Córdoba, drone specialists Alltitud Drones SL, and leading potato farming companies Contagri, SL, and Sevillana de Patatas, SL.
The project addresses a long-standing issue: during conditions that foster mildew growth—such as muddy fields inaccessible to machinery—treatments often required exceptional authorization for aerial application using manned aircraft. This method, while functional, faced limitations in precision and was burdened with complex administrative and legal protocols.
Technological Solutions for Precision AgricultureMildron has introduced remote sensing technologies and drone-based localized treatments to revolutionize how mildew is detected and managed. Key actions during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 agricultural campaigns included:
- Satellite Image Monitoring: Large-scale detection was possible, but limited spatial resolution and cloud interference reduced effectiveness.
- Drone Flights with Multispectral Sensors: This approach delivered centimeter-level precision, enabling the identification of mildew-affected areas and the targeted application of treatments.
The results have been transformative, proving that drones offer a practical, localized solution to mildew management. By minimizing economic losses and reducing the environmental impact of phytosanitary products, Mildron is setting new standards for sustainable agriculture.
Driving Modernization in Andalusian AgricultureField trials on commercial potato farms demonstrated not only the effectiveness of the technology but also the potential for broader applications in precision agriculture. The project’s success positions Andalusia as a leader in agricultural innovation, enhancing the region’s competitiveness in international markets while ensuring environmental sustainability.
In addition to immediate benefits for potato crops, the project has generated valuable technical knowledge that can be applied to other crops and regions facing similar challenges. By significantly reducing the need for phytosanitary products and optimizing treatment precision, Mildron is paving the way for greener, more efficient farming practices.
A Joint Effort Backed by European Support
The success of Mildron is a testament to the collaborative efforts of its operating group, with all phases co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development of the Regional Government of Andalusia.
