Italia: Potatoes from the Veneto strengthen their position
"Sowing is in full swing and forecasts are good: we think we can reach last year’s figures of around 500 hectares,"
reports Piergiorgio Agostini, president of Consorzio La Patata dal Cuore Veneto which, this year, is also looking to launch its own "Pepi Dora" brand.
"Seeds are arriving despite a few logistic difficulties. We are more worried about the water, which is already being saved up due to the dry and mild winter. This also means there are still quite a few parasites in the soil, which usually die off with the cold temperatures. Luckily, our area is not affected by wireworms."
The consortium is recognized as a coordinator also thanks to the Qualità Verificata (QV) mark, a certification issued by CSQA to potato producers.
As for marketing, Alice Gamba explains that "we attended Marca in Bologna to promote the Pepi Dora brand. Feedback was great for our project, which features the production of high-quality local potatoes using agricultural techniques that can be defined as regenerative. My role is to coordinate and manage this important project, which involves 25 businesses part of our consortium, over 500 hectares and two packaging plants."
"We are currently ending the local produce campaign. We are planning the next season with the most popular varieties that comply with our high production standards," concludes the President.
