France: Significant increase in potato area by 2025
A 10.3% increase marks the dynamism of the sector, driven by new farmers

The national area dedicated to the cultivation of storage potatoes in France will reach 197,339 hectares in 2025, representing a 10.3% increase compared to the previous year, i.e., an additional 18,421 hectares compared to the 178,918 hectares recorded in 2024. This is confirmed by the first estimate of the UNPT-CNIPT Panel, based on data collected between May and the end of June 2025 in the main producing regions.
This historic increase reflects the massive incorporation of new farmers, especially in the industrial-oriented segment, who have firmly invested in this crop, compared to more subdued growth among traditional producers.
Hauts-de-France, undisputed leader
The Hauts-de-France region, which includes Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy, consolidates its leadership as the country’s leading producer, accounting for over 60% of the total cultivated area. In absolute terms, this region recorded a combined increase of 11,020 hectares, with Picardy particularly notable, adding 6,860 new hectares.
This growth has strengthened the strategic role of Hauts-de-France.
in the potato supply chain for both the industry and the fresh consumer market.
The role of new farmers
One of the report’s most significant findings is that most of the growth comes from new producers who have decided to enter the field of storage potato cultivation, especially to supply the food industry. In contrast, traditional producers are showing a more stable and moderate growth in terms of acreage.
This phenomenon points to the growing attractiveness of the sector, possibly driven by market opportunities, favorable prices, and rising demand for industrial processing (chips, starch, frozen foods, etc.).
Meteorological factors: the great unknown
As every year, summer weather conditions will determine the final outcome of the production. Although the cultivated area has increased significantly, crop productivity and quality will depend on factors such as rainfall, average temperature, and pest infestation.
The field monitoring that the UNPT will conduct together with the CNIPT in the coming weeks will provide a more accurate picture of the 2025 campaign.
Conclusions: a structural change?
This 10.3% increase in storage potato acreage could signal a structural change in the French agricultural model. The entry of new players, crop diversification, and growing interest in supplying the industry are clear signs of a dynamic sector with the capacity to adapt and export potential.
It will be crucial to observe how this expansion translates into agricultural yield, product quality, and market equilibrium, especially if this trend continues into 2026.
