Brazil: Winter potato harvest has begun, with prices seeing a significant drop
The trend is for supply to increase in the coming weeks.
Special agate potato prices averaged R$42/sc at wholesalers in São Paulo (SP) (-20.4%), R$39/sc at wholesalers in Belo Horizonte (MG) (-23%) and R$41/sc at wholesalers in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) (-20.4%).
Prices have been trending downward since mid-June, and this trend was accentuated at the beginning of this month. This is due to the fact that the Vargem Grande do Sul (SP) region began supplying, further increasing the availability of the tuber. In addition to Vargem Grande do Sul, the southwest region of São Paulo continues to harvest strongly, and wholesalers report abundant potato supplies from the South and Cerrado regions of Minas Gerais, as well as Cristalina (GO).
Supply is expected to increase further in the coming weeks, as the peak of the winter harvest is expected to be reached between August and September.
