Bolivia: Hailstorm in Sacaca destroys potato crops

According to the preliminary report sent to the Governor’s risk management unit, the municipalities of Sacaca and Caripuyo experienced hailstorms. This weather phenomenon resulted in more than 150 families in the communities of Colloma, Chacoma, Lawa Lawa, and Queñuani losing their corn, fruit, and potato crops in Sacaca, while in Caripuyo, the hail caused the roof of the Lacaya school to collapse.

Currently, technicians from the Risk Management Units of the municipalities (UGRs) are assessing the damage caused by the hail.

In order to prevent the loss of 100 percent of the growing crops, the Secretary of Agricultural Development and Food Security of the Autonomous Departmental Government of Potosí is preparing the delivery of foliar fertilizers, hail nets, urea fertilizers, early seeds, diammonium phosphate and dried foods.

According to satellite monitoring carried out by the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi), hail will continue to fall this week, especially in the Potosí valleys.

“In the northern Potosí region, four communities were affected by hailstorms that lasted 30 minutes, damaging corn, potato, and fruit tree crops across 55 hectares. Similarly, in Caripuyo, a shed collapsed under the weight of the hail, affecting 150 students. We are coordinating with the authorities of these municipalities to deliver aid to the families affected by this weather event,” stated the Secretary of Agricultural Development, Genaro Méndez.
