Alemania (Baja Sajonia): "Contrary to the nationwide trend, there were quite reasonable potato yields in our region"

In the area of table potatoes, the 2025 marketing year has started quite well. "The usual dip in demand after the Christmas holidays was not noticeable at all this year.

Demand was continuous across the range, i.e. for all cooking properties, whereas in other years January can always best be described as a slow period," says Dr. Almuth von Bodenhausen, managing director of Kartoffelaufbereitungs- und Handels GbR based in Hohe Börde OT Brumby (Saxony-Anhalt).

The company, which is located in the heart of the Magdeburg Börde, is primarily dedicated to the procurement, processing and marketing of regionally produced potatoes. Von Bodenhausen: "Contrary to the nationwide trend, there were quite reasonable yields in our region. Although our producers also experienced heavy rain and hail in places, we were spared serious yield losses and significant problems caused by wireworm infestation. In that respect, we got off relatively lightly."

Another increase in stocks desired

The prices of regional potatoes have been stable for weeks, the potato merchant continues. Since the start of the main harvest, there has been a total increase of 5 EUR/100kg, which is actually too little in relation to the storage costs. "We are now waiting for another increase in stocks in the coming weeks, which has already been implemented in the Rhineland. At the moment, the willingness to sell at the producer level is rather low, a lot of goods are being held back. Nevertheless, we have enough goods available to adequately serve the markets."

The Kartoffelaufbereitungs- und Handels GbR, founded in 1996, is one of the few service and trading companies in the Magdeburg Börde and is primarily dedicated to the sale of regionally produced potatoes. "Although the national yield is currently estimated to be lower than initially thought, we assume that - similar to other years - we will be able to offer goods from the Börde until mid-May. After the end of the local season, we will take a summer break until the start of the new harvest in September."

Right:

The promising varieties in the Börde include Merle and Jule from Solana. The already established Belana had rather weaker yields last year.

Downward trend characterizes regional table potato cultivationAs in many other growing regions, the future prospects for potato cultivation in Saxony-Anhalt are not particularly rosy. "I do not categorically rule out that some producers will abandon the rather high-maintenance table potato cultivation in the coming years, but may be interested in growing processing potatoes. Likewise, many farms have not yet secured their successors, which could then have an impact on the markets at some point," warns Von Bodenhausen in conclusion.
