Reino Unido: Price of potatoes rise in UK
UK potato prices are currently up 30% year-over-year (y-o-y), due to a decline in production.
Potato output in the UK for 2016/17 fell 5% y-o-y to 5.2m tonnes, 2% below the five-year average, despite an increase in planted area, according to the Mintec analysts. Yields in 2016/17 are estimated at 44.9 tonnes per hectare, down 8% on last year due to adverse weather seen throughout the growing season. The decline in production saw UK potato stocks fall to the lowest level since 2012/13 at 2.9m tonnes in November. Prices in the UK have also strengthened on low supplies elsewhere in Europe.
