Mexico: Potato prices reached a historic high

According to experts in the agri-food sector, the increase is not due to exceptionally high consumption, but to a decrease in supply caused by a reduction in cultivated area, delays in harvests, and adverse weather conditions.

Data indicates that the price of white potatoes for consumers increased by more than 100% compared to the same period of the previous year. For example, in Mexico City, the price rose from approximately 28.78 pesos per kilogram in 2025 to almost 58 pesos in 2026.

Among the factors that have caused this increase are high temperatures, water stress, a decrease in agricultural yields, delays in harvests in producing states such as Puebla, Veracruz and the State of Mexico, in addition to the increased cost of fertilizers, transport, energy and other inputs.

This impact also affects producers and retailers, who face higher supply costs. Some businesses have reduced their purchases or opted to offer other potato varieties to maintain competitive prices for consumers.
