Mexico: Potato imports from the US are gaining ground in restaurants, hotels, and processed foods
Although Mexican potatoes still dominate fresh consumption, US potatoes are gaining popularity in Mexico.
The potato is one of the most universal ingredients in gastronomy. From tacos de canasta to the side dish of grilled fish, it can be transformed into mashed potatoes in a fine-dining restaurant or served as French fries in an international chain. Its presence on the Mexican table seems unwavering, but behind this common ingredient, a commercial battle is being waged that is changing the way the country supplies its culinary industry.
Mexico remains a significant potato producer. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), domestic production is projected to reach approximately 2.28 million tons during the 2025/26 marketing year, while domestic consumption is expected to reach 2.78 million tons. This indicates that the country still supplies most of its market, but increased consumption and growth in the food industry have led to a higher volume of imports.
