Peru (Huánuco): Frost and hailstorms impact 237 hectares of native potato crops in six provinces

The Native Potato project promotes phytosanitary control, optimizes seed quality, and coordinates potato marketing, both in the national market and in export initiatives.

Climatic conditions in the Huánuco region are negatively impacting native potato production in at least six provinces due to an increase in pests and diseases affecting the crops. Emerson Vásquez, coordinator of the Native Potato Project, indicated that rains, frosts, and climate change have favored the emergence of problems such as late blight, forcing producers to implement phytosanitary control measures, albeit with restrictions on the use of chemical inputs. Vásquez explained that, while certain products are being applied, the management of native potatoes requires limiting the intensive use of chemicals.

The impact affects a large number of producer associations linked to the project, with a total of 237 hectares damaged across 139 communities within the intervention area. The project operates in provinces such as Ambo, Yarowilca, Huamalíes, Huánuco, Pachitea, and Dos de Mayo, providing technical support to native potato farmers.

Given this situation, the implementation of preventative treatments to halt the spread of disease is being prioritized. Vásquez emphasized the importance of acting before the disease fully manifests, seeking to limit its proliferation and reduce its impact.

Despite the challenges encountered, some crops are still developing well, with optimistic estimates projecting a yield of 10 to 12 tons for the next harvest. Furthermore, the project includes strategic improvements in the medium term, such as land reclamation and the establishment of specialized infrastructure, including in-vitro cultivation laboratories, testing centers, and greenhouses designed to optimize seed quality.

In commercial terms, efforts are being promoted to connect production with the Lima market and explore export possibilities, highlighting the interest expressed by Brazilian companies in acquiring processed potatoes.

As part of efforts to strengthen fieldwork, the Regional Government of Huánuco, through the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, has delivered 113 backpack sprayers along with caps and vests. These resources are destined for the demonstration modules of the Native Potato project in six provinces and represent a total investment of S/ 71,221.

The distribution aims to improve phytosanitary management in the face of advancing pests such as late blight and is geared towards increasing both crop productivity and quality. Furthermore, this support is expected to provide better working conditions for producers and strengthen the sustainable development of demonstration plots in the beneficiary communities.
