EEUU: Potato growers report strong fall harvests ahead of holiday season
U.S. potato growers are experiencing exceptionally strong fall harvests, setting the stage for a robust holiday sales period, as Tom Burfield reports for The Packer.
Eric Beck of Idaho’s Wada Farms Marketing Group likened the current potato movement to the “Super Bowl,” anticipating significant shipments and top-notch quality across conventional and organic varieties. He described quality as “top notch.”
Idaho-based companies like Eagle Eye Produce and Wilcox Fresh have benefited from favorable weather, resulting in outstanding crop size and consistency despite a slight reduction in acreage. Retailers are encouraged to stock jumbo-sized bags, which offer advantages for both consumers and sellers.
The Idaho potato industry is also addressing economic challenges such as inflation by adopting robotics and artificial intelligence to manage rising costs. Wada Farms has successfully mitigated some inflationary pressures, while Wilcox Fresh has faced increased packaging costs.
Despite these challenges, consumer demand for potatoes remains strong due to their affordability and versatility. Additionally, yellow potatoes are becoming more popular over pricier red varieties as consumers seek to maximize their budgets. These strategies and market trends position Idaho potato growers for continued success in the upcoming season.
