Canadá: Total 2020 Canadian potato acreage estimated at 363,470 acres
Statistics Canada has released its first estimate of potato acreage in Canada, compiled from data obtained from its survey of potato growers in Canada.
The estimate is as of yet incomplete as the province of Quebec was unable to provide data due to COVID delays. It will be updated when the official information is received. In the meantime, information from the Quebec Potato Producers Association and Statistics Quebec will be utilized.
When the information from Quebec is added into the Statistics Canada survey, it is estimated that the 2020 potato acreage is very close to last year; Up 0.38% or 1,375 acres above 2019.
Given the cuts in processing volume that were handed out at, or before planting time, the industry had expected a decrease in planted acres. Total acreage is estimated at 363,470 acres. Canada’s acreage peaked at 457,500 acres in 2003.
The survey indicates decreases of 3,900 acres in New Brunswick, 2,145 acres in Alberta, 1,000 acres in Prince Edward Island, 300 acres in Saskatchewan, and 100 acres in British Columbia.
Provinces with acreage increases include Quebec with 4,297 acres, Ontario with 2,473 acres, Manitoba with 2,000 acres, and Nova Scotia with 50 acres.
