After more than 20 years of dedicated research, the National Engineering Research Center for Potatoes, in collaboration with Xisen Potato Industry Group, has successfully developed innovative salt-tolerant potato varieties. This breakthrough enables the cultivation of potatoes in saline-alkali soils, opening new possibilities for agriculture in challenging environments.

Their joint efforts have led to the creation of a leading domestic germplasm resource bank for salt-tolerant potatoes, housing over 2,800 preserved accessions. Additionally, researchers have established a standardized system for evaluating salt tolerance and have bred six new salt-tolerant potato varieties.

One standout variety, Xisen No. 53, has demonstrated excellent performance, achieving yields exceeding 3,000 kilograms per mu in soils with a salt content of five per thousand. These advancements in both crop breeding and cultivation techniques have already been applied across more than 10,000 mu (approximately 666.67 hectares) in the Yellow River Delta region. This progress not only enhances food security but also transforms marginal lands into productive agricultural resources.
