Colombia: McCain director admits complex reality of the agribusiness sector
CEO of McCain, a beloved food company, speaks candidly about the situation in Colombia
Agricultural companies in Colombia face a complex environment due to slowing production and the risks associated with El Niño. However, despite these challenges, some companies have managed to remain stable and even achieve outstanding results during this period.
An example of this is McCain, a Canadian company founded in 1957 by brothers Harrison and Wallace McCain, known for its specialization in frozen foods, with a particular focus on pre-fried potatoes.
Over the years, McCain has expanded its presence to more than 160 countries and has positioned itself as one of the global leaders in the production of potato products. This has been made possible by a strategy based on innovation, agricultural development, and a robust network of production facilities.
In Colombia, McCain began operations in 1996 through the acquisition of the Mekato factory, focusing on potato chip production. Shortly thereafter, in 2000, the company purchased Congelagro, a local company that strengthened its capacity to serve both the domestic market and other countries in the region. Since then, McCain has established partnerships with local producers, particularly in the Cundinamarca-Boyacá region, promoting a sustainable supply chain that relies on domestic agriculture.
Fredy Quevedo, general manager of McCain for the Andean region encompassing Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, spoke with Portafolio and highlighted that the company has managed to double its average potato productivity compared to national levels. “We are having an excellent performance compared to last year. However, McCain belongs to the agribusiness sector, which means facing very specific challenges,” he noted.
Despite its achievements, Quevedo acknowledged the current challenges facing the sector. He explained that the beginning of the year was difficult for the agribusiness industry in general, with a 1.5% decline in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period the previous year. However, he emphasized that the company has maintained positive indicators, suggesting a promising future.
