Spain: Low incidence of pests in potato crops in Castile and León

The treatment threshold for the potato moth has not been reached. Both the Colorado potato beetle and aphids remain at reduced levels, as does the flea beetle.

The potato crop monitoring program in Castile and León remains under general surveillance, with no significant incidents related to the main monitored pests reported. This monitoring network operates under a collaboration agreement between the Agricultural Pests and Diseases Observatory of Itacyl, the Castile and León Potato Interprofessional Organization (OIPACyL), and FMC Agricultural Solutions.

The purpose of this initiative is to ensure the early detection of pests and diseases in potato crops, providing technical recommendations to support farmers in making decisions on their plots. Thanks to the information gathered, it is possible to adjust phytosanitary interventions to the actual needs of each area, thus avoiding unnecessary applications.

Regarding the potato tuber moth, flight records indicate low capture levels in all monitored areas. So far, no monitoring station has exceeded the thresholds that would warrant phytosanitary treatment.

On the other hand, the Colorado potato beetle and aphids also show reduced presence in most of the plots evaluated. Furthermore, no flea beetle infestation has been identified at any of the points included in the monitoring network.

Itacyl emphasizes the importance of inspecting each plot before applying any phytosanitary treatment. Actions should only be taken when the established thresholds for each pest or disease are reached, avoiding unjustified preventative use.

It is also advisable to alternate products with different modes of action when it is necessary to perform more than one treatment, in order to minimize the risk of generating resistance.

Finally, emphasis is placed on the exclusive use of products registered and authorized in the Official Register of Plant Protection Products issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
