Argentina: The play that inspired the film “The Two Popes” arrives in the country

The acclaimed play The Pope, written by Anthony McCarten —author of hits such as The Theory of Everything, Bohemian Rhapsody and Darkest Hour— is preparing its arrival in Argentina under the title The Two Popes.

Its world premiere took place in June 2019 at the Royal & Derngate Theatre in Northampton, England, where it garnered excellent reviews. The play was such a success that McCarten himself adapted the screenplay into a film titled The Two Popes, a Netflix original production directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City of God).

The film, starring Anthony Hopkins (Pope Benedict XVI) and Jonathan Pryce (Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, future Pope Francis), was nominated for three Oscars, four Golden Globes and five BAFTAs, cementing McCarten as one of today’s most outstanding screenwriters.

In 2025, the play had its first international adaptation in Brazil, directed by Munir Kanaan and produced by Rafael Steinhauseps and Carol Godoy. The production quickly became a box office success, running in major cities across the country.

Now, The Pope will cross the border: Argentine producers Luis Penna and Diego Djeredjian confirmed that the local version is in the pre-production stage, in co-production format with the Brazilian filmmakers. 

At this stage, the cast, the premiere date, the theater, and the creative team that will bring to life this story are being defined, a story that explores, with sensitivity and intelligence, the link between two of the most influential figures in the contemporary Catholic Church.
