Germany: Now there’s even plant-based milk made from potatoes
Plant-based milk alternatives are trending. More and more people are avoiding cow’s milk – for health, ethical, or environmental reasons. Whether soy, oat, or almond: the selection is constantly growing.

According to YouGov, 34 percent of Germans consume plant-based milk substitutes. Oat drinks are the most popular among German consumers (66 percent), followed by almond (44 percent), soy (32 percent), and coconut (23 percent).
► Now a new alternative is making its way into German supermarkets (and influencers’ social media channels): potato milk.
Kaufland, along with Rossmann, is one of the first retailers in Germany to offer the potato alternative in brick-and-mortar stores. It’s also available online at Rewe , Rossmann, Velivery.com, and Knuspr.de. Currently, there’s only one supplier: the product from Swedish manufacturer DUG, which is available as a "Barista Drink" and a sugar-free "Unsweetened" version.
Potato milk is based on potatoes and is similar in consistency and taste to conventional cow’s milk , according to the Swedish manufacturer. It is gluten-free , frothable, contains less sugar, and is suitable for people with soy or nut allergies. Furthermore, according to the manufacturer, it is particularly sustainable – with up to 67 percent less CO₂ emissions than cow’s milk and less water consumption than almond milk .
Potato milk: At 2.49 euros per liter, the new plant-based alternative is exactly in the price range of other oat or almond milk variants in German supermarkets
► Conventional milk is repeatedly suspected of having negative effects on human health. Animal rights activists also criticize the poor treatment of dairy cows. However, there are also cases in which cow’s milk can be healthier than milk substitutes . Furthermore, according to one study, cow’s milk helps reduce the risk of colon cancer .
