Poland ranks 9th in global potato production with 8.2 million tons, ahead of the Netherlands

While China holds the dominant position as the world’s top producer, contributing a massive 93 million tons of global supply, Poland is now ranked in the 9th spot, producing 8.2 million tons of potatoes.

Following China, India is the second-largest producer with 60.1 million tons, while Ukraine, the United States, and Russia round out the top five, with production figures of 21.4 million tons, 20 million tons, and 19.3 million tons, respectively. Other notable European producers include Germany with 10.5 million tons, and France with 8.8 million tons, while Bangladesh has seen significant production growth, reaching 9.9 million tons.

The data, sourced from FAOSTAT for 2023, shows that Asia is the dominant continent for potato production, followed by Europe, North America, and Africa. The global area harvested for potatoes has decreased to 16.8 million hectares in 2023, down from 18.1 million hectares in 2022. However, this reduction in area has not led to a decline in yields. Global potato yields have increased, reaching a total of 383 million tons in 2023, up from 376 million tons the previous year.

Poland’s rise in the rankings reflects a steady increase in its potato production, cementing its place as a major player in the global agricultural market.
