FAOSTAT 2024: Global potato production rises despite shrinking harvested area

The global potato industry witnessed significant contributions from diverse regions in 2023, with new data from FAOSTAT shedding light on production trends across continents and countries.

China stood at the forefront of potato production, delivering over 93 million metric tons. Alongside China, India, Ukraine, Russia, the United States, and Germany were prominent contributors, illustrating the widespread capability for potato cultivation

FAOSTAT’s 2023 data positioned China as the top producer with 93,491,818 metric tons, followed by India with 60,142,000 metric tons, and Ukraine with 21,358,630 metric tons. The list continued with the United States, Russia, Germany, Bangladesh, France, Poland, and the Netherlands, marking the top 10 potato-producing countries.

On a continental scale, Asia dominated production with 175.8 million metric tons, while Europe contributed 47.2 million metric tons. North America and Africa added 28.5 million and 16.9 million metric tons, respectively, with Oceania contributing 1.89 million metric tons.

The global harvested area in 2023 was 16.8 million hectares, a decrease from 18.1 million hectares in 2022. Despite this, total production rose to 383 million metric tons, up from 376 million metric tons the previous year, indicating enhanced yield efficiencies.

The analysis underscored Asia’s pivotal role in meeting global demand. Countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are modernizing their agricultural sectors, including mechanization and improved post-harvest infrastructure to boost productivity and stabilize supply chains.

In Africa, investments in agricultural technology and infrastructure aim to address challenges such as water access and seed quality. Innovations in irrigation and the development of climate-resilient varieties are expected to increase the continent’s potato output.

Europe’s focus on sustainable practices and high-yield varieties showcases its leadership in agricultural innovation. Precision agriculture in Europe is enhancing the efficiency of resource use, contributing to global sustainability objectives.

North America is leveraging technology, including drones and artificial intelligence, to advance potato farming, aiming to improve productivity and reduce losses.

The global trend towards organic potato production reflects a shift in consumer preferences towards sustainable and healthy food choices, with efforts underway to scale organic farming across continents.
