EEUU: Idaho-based producer updates packaging options, promotes staff

Idaho potato producers are in the midst of packing season while waiting for new crop potatoes to grow and mature. But there are other changes in the works for some growers.

Eagle Eye Produce, which grows more than 30,000 acres of potatoes and other fresh produce from Idaho to Mexico, has made some changes recently.

In the last year, the company has been upgrading its packaging technologies, allowing it to broaden the scope of its potato packaging options.

“The industry is seeing a trend towards smaller, more convenient packaging,” explained Dallin Klingler of Eagle Eye Produce. “We now pack steamer bags, small mesh baby potato bags, pouch bags, and our own value add items like our microwaveable potato tray with olive oil (Tiny Taters®), and our fresh cut potato product with real butter and spices (Fresh Blends®).”

All of these products are available in our own label as well as Private Label,” he added. “We hope that these new items will reach this new convenience driven demographic. We also aim to provide all convenience and value add items out of the same location we ship conventional potatoes. Eagle Eye Produce is striving to be a true one-stop-shop in that sense which is something that we believe differentiates us from the other grower/shippers in our industry.”

Consolidations and staff promotions

In addition to updating its packaging options to include more convenience packs, the company is seeking to promote its entire range of produce. In support of this effort to promote its lesser known commodities and incorporate them alongside its potato and onion offerings, the company has promoted two key staff members.

“We have promoted our once Vice President of sales over potato and onions, Lance Poole, to Executive Vice President,” Klingler shared. “He will now be overseeing all commodities sold at Eagle Eye Produce as well as our logistics companies. We have also promoted our once Watermelon Sales Director John Gee, to Vice President of Sales. He will be assisting with promoting all our commodities including some of our lesser-known commodities like onions, watermelon, pumpkins, grapes, and our vegetable program.”

“We grow more than just potatoes”

Klingler said that Eagle Eye Produce sources the majority of its potatoes from over 12,000 acres in Idaho, in addition to over 10,000 acres in other states including Washington, Nevada, California and Colorado. Klingler also mentioned that the company supplies all the major potato varieties year-round. However, they are also working on spreading the word that they grow more than potatoes.

“We grow all sizes of russets, reds, yellow, and white potatoes with year-round availability,” he noted. “Eagle Eye Produce is one of the first shippers to have our Idaho russet, red and yellow potatoes available out of a single shipping location year round and we are also one of the largest organic potato suppliers, with organic russets, reds, and yellows all available year round as well. Eagle Eye Produce is headquartered in Idaho, the potato state, and we have a very strong multi-state potato program, but we grow much more than just potatoes and we want to make a bigger effort to communicate that to our industry.”
