Holanda: First new own-grown Mallorca Doré potatoes have arrived
Kruythof Potato Traders Strijen has specialised in the sales of potatoes for more than 50 years. This Dutch company has been growing early Doré potatoes on the Spanish island of Mallorca for three years now.
During the winter, on 22 December, the first of these seed potatoes were planted in Spanish soil. This week, the first new potatoes arrived in the Dutch market.
"We are counting on an area of 5 hectares. Many fields were flooded on the Spanish mainland. On Mallorca, we had perfect weather conditions", says Ton Kruythof. "I expect that we will have a yield of 50 tonnes per hectare. We will have a good volume of new potatoes available. This is great because there is plenty of demand. The new harvest runs out quickly, so many people are jumping at the chance to get new potatoes."
Kruythof represents about 15 to 20 weekly markets in the Rotterdam area. In 2012, they also launched the webshop, www.aardappelenbezorgen.nl. "We deliver throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. We offer about 15 potato varieties on this website. These include organic varieties. If you order before 16:00 we will deliver the potatoes to your desired address within 48 hours", concludes Ton.
