Rumania: Romania produced slightly over 2 million tons of potatoes in 2020
In 2020, Romania’s potato production exceeded the 2 million tons, but was 21% smaller than in the previous year, when 2.62 million tons were harvested, according to data published by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The average yield per hectare decreased from 15.44 tons in 2019 to 12.56 in 2020, and the acreage devoted to potatoes dropped by 4,394 hectares, from 170,063 in 2019 to 165,660 hectares in 2020.
Ten years ago, Romania was growing 3.5-4 million tons of potatoes on a larger acreage, ranging between 200,000 and 250,000 hectares. In the last five years, however, the acreage has dropped below the 200,000 hectares. The most traditional potato growing areas are Harghita, Covasna, Brasov, Suceava and Sibiu.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, the monthly per capita consumption of potatoes in Romania in 2018 was 3.02 kg.
